Ultimately, we will want to manipulate the intensity of the light and dark edges, but for now let’s set them to +1 and -1. We will give the line around the outside a width of 3 pixels. Now let’s think about each oval we will give it a lightish green colour, say, and a size of 10 pixels horizontally and 18 pixels vertically. Next, let’s set the background colour to a uniform darkish blue say. This is probably too small if we were running the experiment “for real”, but it will do for our purposes. Now that we have a qualitative understanding the key components of the stimulus, let’s make them quantitative so we can specify them in our code.įirst, let’s set the overall stimulus size at 400 pixels. Overall, the ovals are presented on a dark lightly-textured background of blues and purples. Looking at each individual oval, we can also see that one side has a white edge and the other side has a black edge. ![]() Moving up the rows from the bottom, we can see that the orientation of each successive oval is shifted clockwise from the previous oval. Moving across the columns from left to right, we can see that the orientation of each successive oval is shifted anti-clockwise from the previous oval. On visual inspection of the image above, we can see that it is formed from a grid of green oval shapes. Now we reach the tricky part-how can we create a stimulus containing the illusion?įirst, we need to closely examine our demonstration stimulus and determine its key components. Hence, we decide to run an experiment where we manipulate the difference between the intensity of the light and dark regions as our independent variable.Īs our dependent variable, we will have participants rate the subjective experience of motion on a scale from 1 to 5.Īs before, we will work through our experiment framework and build up the code as we go through. ![]() We have an inkling that the light and dark regions at the edge of each oval are critical to the illusion. We are interested in knowing what factors in the stimulus lead us to perceive the motion. Perhaps it was motivated after seeing the cover of the album Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective, as shown below. Our experiment involves a particular visual illusion in which a completely static stimulus appears to be moving, particularly around the time of an eye movement. In this lesson, we are going to work through the process of implementing another experiment in Python and psychopy. ![]() Be able to follow and understand another example of experiment creation and implementation in Python.

![]() "But it is not out of the question that the moons date back to the time of ring formation," said Porco. Just exactly when the rings formed is not known. "The core may in fact be one of the remnants from the original ring-forming event," said co-author Derek Richardson, professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park, "which might have been left intact all this time and protected from additional collisional breakup by the mantle of ring particles around it." Where did such large cores come from? And when did this all take place? To make a 30-kilometer moon (19 miles) requires a seed of about 10 kilometers (6 miles). The result is a ring-region moon about two to three times the size of its dense ice core, covered with a thick shell of porous, icy ring material. By this process, a moon will grow even if it is relatively close to Saturn. Simple calculations and more complicated computer simulations have shown that ring particles will readily become bound to a larger seed having the density of water ice. Image credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute Janus appears above Saturn's rings and Prometheus, more elongated, is below the rings. Porco is the lead author of the first of two related articles published in this week's issue of Science. ![]() "We think the only way these moons could have reached the sizes they are now, in the ring environment as we now know it to be, was to start off with a massive core to which the smaller, more porous ring particles could easily become bound," said Carolyn Porco, Cassini imaging team leader from the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo. So how did they do it? They got a jump start. The trouble was, these moons are within and near the rings, where it is not possible for small particles to fuse together gravitationally. The tip-off was the very low density of the inner moons, about half that of pure water ice, and sizes and shapes that suggested they have grown by the accumulation of ring material. 7 issue of the journal Science, has led to new insights into how some of these moons may have formed. Now, several years' worth of cosmic images of Saturn's 14 known small moons have been used to derive the sizes and shapes of most of them, and in about half the cases, even masses and densities. And the small, irregularly shaped ring-region moons were believed to be the leftover pieces from this breakup. The resulting debris quickly spread and settled into the equatorial plane to form a thin disk surrounding the planet. It has long been suspected that Saturn's rings formed in the disintegration of one or several large icy bodies, perhaps pre-existing moons, by giant impacts. The moons began as leftover shards from larger bodies that broke apart and filled out their "figures" with the debris that made the rings. Imaging scientists on NASA's Cassini mission are telling a tale of how the small moons orbiting near the outer rings of Saturn came to be. The highest resolution images of Pan (right) and Atlas (left) reveal distinctive "flying saucer" shapes created by prominent equatorial ridges not seen on the other small moons of Saturn. The mustachioed righty did let runners get on the corners in the first inning thanks to a pair of singles, but Verdugo couldn’t get that final hit they needed and left the runners standing there. Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Imagesīut things weren’t going much better on the other side, with Cease being one of the hottest pitchers in the game and very much looking the part in this game. Chicago got two runners on in the inning, but they were again stranded. Alex Verdugo had to change course and sprint in, and came up short on a diving attempt. In the third, the wind came into play when Leury García hit what looked like a routine fly ball to left field, but instead died right after the infield. In the first, Tim Anderson got into scoring position on a single and a steal, the latter being well-timed on a slow curveball. He did get into a couple bits of trouble throughout the game, to be fair, though it wasn’t always his fault. ![]() His slider in particular was nails, and he kept the White Sox off the board through the first five innings. ![]() This time he still had that same control, and he was able to pair it with the crispest stuff I can remember seeing from him to start this year. He looked like he was taking a step in the right direction his last time out, not issuing a walk for the first time this year. That’s not to take away from the work done by Nick Pivetta and Dylan Cease, though, each of whom had good stuff in this one and kept their opponents off-balance.įor Pivetta, it was a welcomed sight considering how rough the start of his 2022 season has been to this point. That wind would certainly prove to hold up and knock down balls throughout this game, and indeed to lend itself to the pitching. This team can’t get out of its own way.Īt the start of the NESN broadcast on Saturday, Dennis Eckersley mentioned that it was a pitchers kind of day at Fenway, noting the strong wind blowing directly in from the outfield. As everyone in the world expected after that, Matt Barnes gave up multiple runs in the 10th, and that was that. ![]() Sure enough, Hansel Robles blew the save in the ninth, then Bobby Dalbec and Trevor Story combined to blow a prime chance to walk it off in the bottom half. Unfortunately, the offense is still in hibernation and scored just one run, leaving the door open for Chicago. He tossed six shutout innings, and the bullpen tossed a couple scoreless frames behind him. They got another phenomenal start on Saturday, this time from Nick Pivetta, who was in desperate need for a day like this. This would be working perfectly fine with compatible version of Windows. Suppose money is no object and your team is willing to deal with a bit of complexity. If you need faster or accelerated access to your data, you can pay for that on Amazon, but you can’t with Backblaze B2 or Wasabi. If you have something that you need to store (e.g., for compliance reasons), but you will never access it, AWS’s Glacier Deep will be a lot cheaper than Backblaze B2 or Wasabi. While it’s a feature of Wasabi and Backblaze B2 to have simple and/or single-tier pricing, this can also be a bug depending on the use case. Only sometimes do they have multiple zones within a region. If your business case requires your data to survive a catastrophic event that affects the single data center your data is stored in, Backblaze B2 and Wasabi might not be a good fit. While smaller vendors can replicate your data as well, they generally do so within a single zone (i.e., a single data center). More than one has tiers that will replicate your data inter-zonally and inter-regionally several times over by default. The Big 3 has far more regions and zones to replicate your data across. Not necessarily a “gotcha,” but vendors like Backblaze don’t always meet the specific compliance requirements of some industries. One storage class (or two if you count Reserved Capacity Storage), which provides simplicity at the cost of flexibility.Fewer features, like eventing, which can impact development time and integration with other cloud services.Fewer regions, which can impact data geo-redundancy.The “gotchas” shared by both Wasabi and Backblaze B2 fall into four buckets: Gotchas Specific To Wasabi and Backblaze B2 Azure Blob Storage has a point-in-time restore feature that can be a life-saver if data becomes corrupted.Amazon S3 has a robust (and largely unmatched) storage analytics suite called S3 Storage Lens to get visibility into your security profile and opportunities to increase efficiency.Google Cloud Storage supports 3rd party billing to share the costs of accessing data with the organizations or users that access your data.In addition, some of these low-cost providers don’t have some of the features you might not think you need now but could come in very handy later: Robust Identity and Access Management (IAM).In contrast, others lack the management features you and/or your compliance and security officers are undoubtedly used to, including: Need to meet a compliance requirement, like HIPAA? Or need to meet standard requirements for access management (i.e., IAM)? Unfortunately, several low-cost object storage providers don’t score well in terms of meeting compliance requirements. While the pricing of the storage-only providers is attractive, they come with “gotchas” of their own: In addition, like Digital Ocean, Cloudflare R2, and Linode, some package together data transfer with standard storage in their pricing or offer it for free. The specialized providers tend to have better data transfer fees. On the other hand, the specialized (i.e., storage-only) providers are much much cheaper, sometimes at under 30% of the cost of Amazon S3 for standard storage, like: There’s a bucket of broad-based but lower-cost providers that mete out at about 50-90% the cost of Amazon S3 ($21-23/TB/mo) for standard storage. If you’re lucky in this case, your engineers have a habit of wrapping code to make it agnostic. ![]() If an engineer enabled accelerated code on your storage and then has to swap that out, then it’s not codeless migration to any one of these specialized providers, which in turn impacts your TCO. ![]() For example, S3 Transfer Acceleration won’t be compatible with another provider because AWS uses proprietary algorithms to reroute data rapidly within AWS. ![]() Several specialized services related to S3 would be hard to run without the AWS backbone (i.e., where you pull from or how you transit data). Generally, the most significant differences between Amazon’s native API and other implementations revolve around concurrency and data transfer. Others don’t have a specialized endpoint, so they try to make their native endpoint look as much as possible like Amazon S3’s API. For example, some vendors put up endpoints that can take S3-like requests and convert them to native requests for their platform. Several standard implementations of the S3 API have significant differences between them in compliance with the S3 standard. To be fair, most vendors have done a decent job implementing the core components of the S3 API, but it’s imperative to know if they cover what you need that isn’t core. For example, looking at one specific aspect of the S3 API, Amazon S3 has plenty of settings on the S3 Multi-part Upload configuration that we find are rarely consistent with anyone else’s implementation of the S3 API. ![]() ![]() The specific areas for this course related to forensic science/criminalistics include the crime scene, death investigation, physical evidence, drugs and DNA. The second generation Equinox was announced by GM on December 21, 2008, and debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. GM also prominently promoted the GXP in television advertisements by touting its horsepower advantage over the BMW X3, in an effort to brand Pontiac more as a direct, low-cost rival to BMW. GM stated the Equinox Sport was the first vehicle to reflect its more cautious naming standards. Optional features included navigation, heated sport leather seats, DVD entertainment system, a sunroof and all-wheel drive. The GXP had twin hood scoops, hydraulic power-assisted steering (as opposed to the electric power-assisted standard Torrent), improved interior trim with unique gauges, and a dual chrome-tipped exhaust. The lower stance is accented by the 18-inch 5-spoke chrome wheels and the absence of the roof rack, giving them a smoother design flow compared to the standard models. These models also received a 1 in (25 mm) lowered ride height with a performance-tuned suspension and unique front and rear body kits. This larger and more powerful (264 hp (197 kW 268 PS) or 40% increase) engine allowed acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in under seven seconds.
